It’s 1858, and the 400 officers and men of U.S. Army Fort Davis in the west Texas wilderness are dreading the imminent arrival of a new commanding officer, war hero Captain Nathaniel Chambers, who has the reputation of an overly demanding and ruthlessly strict officer.

But the fort currently suffers under the regime of an entirely different kind of commander: Lieutenant Martin, whose lack of leadership and erratic discipline has led the fort to a state of disarray, low morale, and dangerously inadequate fighting capability.

But then a lonely private rides into the fort and reports for duty … and nothing is ever again the same …

 
Advent is a short story prequel to the Road to The Breaking series, an epic adventure that follows Army Captain Nathaniel Chambers and his men as they travel back to Virginia across a young nation seething with debauchery, brutality, corruption, and political intrigue, unwittingly on the brink of an unimaginable disaster: the American Civil War.  Army Captain Nathan Chambers has left the violent army life behind in Texas, never imaging he’s on the very Road to The Breaking.
